2008 Homerun Derby... A TV Nightmare

What happened to the homerun derby yesterday? Talk about failure. That was one mess after another culminating in a massive pile that a starving drunk fly wouldn't touch.

Let's take them one at a time.

First off, Chris Berman announcing was the wrong choice. I know he does it every year but lets get a baseball guy up there (and I'm NOT talking about Joe Morgan) and get some new lines. Back, back, back? Come On! That's his boring football shtick.

Second, Chase cursing. Chase is right and New York (Mets fans) are wrong. It's the homerun derby people! It's an exhibition of an exhibition. If there ever was a time when you let it go and enjoy things for the love of the game its then.

Third, Josh Hamilton hits 28 in the first round and loses. LOSES! Hey, um, JB? Maybe the rules need to be changed? How can MLB and ESPN let this happen? They never should have wiped the slate clean for the final round. This “derby” was over in the first round and anything else is anticlimactic. I felt sorry for poor Justin Morneau. What is that trophy going to mean when he hit 13 less dingers and won.

Fourth, When Hamilton hit his 24th (I think it was his 24th) the ball went into the fenced off black area in right center. Well a couple fans wanted that ball real bad, and ran over to get it. The cops had other ideas and decided to stop these most horrible criminals from taking a ball that belonged to them. They jumped one guy and pushed him into the exit and strangled the other guy at the edge of the homerun fence with a two handed choke hold a la Homer Simpson. I mean, dude, don’t you know that this is on TV? Too bad ESPN pulled the camera away so quick. I couldn't stop laughing from the shock and stupidity. God, I pray someone puts that on YouTube. It was un-freaking-believable and all replays on ESPN were curiously missing that part. Hmmm.

Fifth, and thankfully last, when Justin Morneau was accepting his trophy and jumbo check, the knucklehead from State Farm called him Jason. Erin Andrew’s and Justin’s faces turned a pale greenish white. That guy had exactly one job to do and he 100% completely without exception messed it up. I don't know if she did it on purpose but Erin Andrews must have said Justin's name like 5 times after that either to shove it in the guys face or get people to forget his goof up or I don't know what.

Anyway... poor Justin, poor Josh, dumb State Farm guy, super dumb cop, cool Chase and boring Chris Berman. All in all it was a very entertaining homerun derby. haha.
