Why Watching the PGA on TV is BORING
I can watch the NFL, MLB, NHL NBA, NASCAR and even Tennis and pretty much know who is going to compete for the championship. We can throw in some new teams or players or drivers but there is a core from year to year.
You can't say that for the PGA and that has got to be hurting it. I love playing golf but I don't really know any of the players competing from week to week. There is so much turnover that you cant get any name recognition.
Let’s take a look at the 2011 year for example.
There have been 35 tournaments where I could get results from PGAtour.com. I put together a list of the top 10 finishers in each of these tournaments and sorted based on how many times they finished in the top 10 and how many championships were won. This is what I found:
- There have been 151 different players that have finished in the top 10. So 350 spots have been filled with 151 different players.
- Of those 151 players, 55 had been there only once, 48 have been there twice, 22 three times, 14 four times, 5 five times, 5 six times, 2 seven times and Luke Donald finished in the top 10 eight times.
If you happened to watch four tournaments all year, you would never see the same name in any of the top 10 finishers. You would have to watch 5 tournaments to see Luke Donald, Nick Watney and Matt Kuchar win once.
Who? Not exactly Phil Mickelson (2 championships and 5 top 10 finishes) or... um... Rory McIlroy (1 championship and 3 top 10 finishes).
There have only been 6 players who won 2 championships; Nick Watney, Phil Mickelson, Steve Stricker, Keegan Bradley, Bubba Watson and Mark Wilson.
The field is too evenly matched and there are no standouts that can generate any national attention or special following after Tiger went down.
